Domaine Parpette

Côtes du Rhone | Côte-Rôtie

A micro-producer of minimal intervention wines in Côte-Rôtie

Unlike most vignerons fortunate enough to hold land in Côte-Rôtie, Cédric Parpette did not come from a winemaking background but worked as a car body repairman.

In 1986, his father-in-law, René Fernandez, purchased 2.5 hectares of abandoned vineyard in Côte-Rôtie and spent several years clearing and replanting the southeast facing slope.

In 1996, Fernandez added a parcel in the nearby lieu-dit of Le Plomb (where Jamet and Rostaing have vines – Les Grandes Places is situated between Montmain and Le Plomb) bringing the total domaine to its current surface area of 3.5 hectares.

All of the grapes were sold to negotiants, until Cédric took over in 2003 and decided to hold back some of the grapes to make wine at the domaine. Parpette has gradually increased the number of bottles produced, but remains minuscule at less than 1000 cases.

In December 2022, Cédric Parpette tragically passed away due to complications from an operation. René passed in May 2023. Today, Cédric’s children Romain and Maxime, are the third generation running the estate.

Winemaking
In the cellar, wines are made with little intervention. Everything is fermented in concrete tanks and then racked once into mostly neutral barriques to age for 12-14 months before bottling with any fining or filtration.

Côte-Rôtie Le Montmain
Syrah
The vineyard of Montmain is a large, steep slope of mica schist, angled facing East at 35° to 40°, with little top-soil. The family sold this fruit to Guigal as part of the La Turque bottling for years. The wine is aged 12 months in 225L barriques.

Côtes du Rhône Bertholon Rouge 2023
Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache
Best known for its location flanking the hillside vines owned by Ogier. On the Cote Rotie side of the river.
